At the yearly AAA American Anthropological Association Conference in Philadelphia, the AAA Commission on the Engagement of Anthropology with the U.S. Security and Intelligence Communities (CEAUSSIC) issued its final report on HTS (The Human Terrain System) to the AAA, recommending that the organization “emphasize the incompatibility of HTS with disciplinary ethics and practice for job seekers and that it further recognize the problem of allowing HTS to define the meaning of “anthropology” within DoD.” The report concludes a two-year investigation of HTS and other Department of Defense (DoD) programs that attempt to use anthropologists and anthropological research in military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Human Terrain traces all sides of the controversial effort to embed anthropologists and other social scientists with forward operating units in Iraq and Afghanistan, asking what happens when war becomes academic.
