In a Salt Lake Tribune feature article, Human Terrain co-Director James Der Derian discusse the challenges facing academics who want to contribute critical research for the U.S. Military in the Human Terrain System. Der Derian told the Tribune, “I would say that it will probably be difficult but not impossible to maintain an anti-war viewpoint,” when asked about Joseph Diaz’s dilemma about whether to contribute to the HTS’s goals of reducing civilian casualties even though he doesn’t support the war. “But ultimately, you are working for the man. You’re working for the military. It will be interesting to know how he reconciles that when he goes out with soldiers into the field,” Der Derian added.
